Director of Public Policy and Advocacy

The Lutheran Services in America Disability Network is seeking a Director or Public Policy and Advocacy. Lutheran Services in America connects over 300 health and human services nonprofit service providers throughout the country. Their network supports children, seniors and people with disabilities to enhance quality of life. The successful candidate will lead the pursuit of sound and compassionate public policies that support people with disabilities.
The Director of Public Policy will be responsible for the following items:
  • Represent the Lutheran Services in America Disability Network before Congress, the Administration, regulatory agencies, national organizations and coalitions.
  • Equip Lutheran Services in America Disability Network members with the resources, materials and training to effectively advocate on behalf of the people they support.
  • Analyze, monitor and engage on Medicaid related legislation and regulation as well as other disability issues related to services and supports for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies to preserve and protect Medicaid.
  • Draft legislative language, talking points, correspondence to officials and related advocacy materials.
  • Develop, review and submit regulatory comments.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to members of the Lutheran Services in America Disability Network. Support the network’s Chair, manage the network’s budget, organize quarterly meetings, agendas and speakers and lead regular communications with network members (including weekly e-newsletter).
  • Lead substantive work of LSA-DN related to their most pressing challenges or longer-term priorities of the group. Coordinate network activities and provide staff support for network-wide meetings, sub-groups and legislative meetings.
Deep knowledge of U.S. government, the legislative process, regulatory agencies and health and/or social service programs. In-depth knowledge of Medicaid and/or disabilities issues preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully and maturely interact with both internal and external audiences and represent the organization publicly. Strong attention to detail; self-starter, analytical, able to meet deadlines and a team player. Advanced organizational, management and budgeting experience. Strong written and verbal communications skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks. Flexibility to accommodate occasional overnight travel.
This postion is based in DC, but currently remote due to COVID-19.
