June 25, 2019: Promoting Access to Transportation Options with the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center
Transportation is one of the most frequently requested services in I&R conversations, and is a foundation for community living. At the same time, I&R specialists may be challenged to connect individuals to transportation options. This webinar discussed the resources of the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC), which works to promote the availability and accessibility of transportation options for older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers. Participants also learned about the new national “Every Ride Counts” campaign to support local community efforts to promote transportation programs. NADTC is a program of the Federal Transit Administration administered by Easterseals and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a).
May 16, 2019: The Role of Home Modification in Promoting Aging in Place and Community
As part of an Administration for Community Living (ACL)-funded project focused on home modification, ADvancing States and the University of Southern California (USC) Leonard Davis School of Gerontology hosted this webinar on the role of the home in promoting aging in place and community. During this event, presenters reviewed the fundamentals of home modification, explained different types of agencies and funding sources that offer home modification services, and covered practical skills to use when an older adult or caregiver needs to address fall and safety hazards in the home.
April 23, 2019: Assistive Technology Act Programs: Improving Access to AT for People of All Ages
Assistive Technology Act Programs increase access to, and acquisition of, assistive technology (AT) devices and services for individuals with disabilities and older adults. Programs support a continuum of AT services, from public awareness and information and assistance to loans and reuse programs. This webinar discussed the Assistive Technology Act, state programs and services, and ways that AT can be useful to individuals across the lifespan.
March 20, 2019: An Introduction to the Independent Living Movement
Independent Living is a program, a movement, and a culture. This webinar covered all of these aspects of Independent Living. Presented by the National Council on Independent Living, this webinar reviewed the roots of Independent Living, described the role and services provided by Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), and shared guiding principles that promote independence and community living for people with disabilities.
February 27, 2019: Status and Trends in Public Financing of Supports and Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Financial and programmatic spending on long-term supports and services are compelling indicators of the strength of a nation’s investment in the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in their communities. The State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Project analyzes nearly 40 years’ worth of public financial investments in IDD services and supports, offering a comparative nationwide longitudinal look at financial and programmatic trends in institutional and community-based services for people with IDD in the US. This data reveals longitudinal impacts of federal and state fiscal policies on innovations in the support and services system in the states and nation. This webinar presented preliminary FYs 2016-2017 results and discussed emerging financial and programmatic trends in the current political climate.
January 9, 2019: Findings from the 2018 National Survey of I&R/A Agencies
ADvancing States, in partnership with the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL), surveyed aging and disability Information & Referral/Assistance (I&R/A) agencies nationwide in 2018 to learn about important trends and developments in the field. The survey looked at a variety of key topics, including referrals and service needs; partnerships and system building; technology; quality, training and certification; financing and sustainability; and changing inquirer demographics. This webinar discussed the themes and findings that emerged from the survey. Our presenters were Nanette Relave, Senior Director of the National Information & Referral Support Center, ADvancing States, and Lindsay Baran, Policy Analyst, NCIL.
November 7, 2018: Retirement Issues and Referrals: Resources for I&R/A Providers
This webinar discussed retirement issues and referrals. Around 10,000 individuals reach retirement age every day in the U.S. Retirement can bring new opportunities but can also raise concerns and issues with retirement plans for workers, retirees, and their families. This webinar covered the basics of retirement plans, common issues experienced by retirees and family members, resources that promote retirement security, and referrals for pension counseling and help. Our presenter was Emily Spreiser, Legal Program Director, Pension Rights Center.

This training provides an overview of key competencies needed for aging and disability I&R/A professionals, and provides preparation for the AIRS Certification exam for I&R Specialists in Aging/Disabilities. September 20, 2018: National Volunteer Caregiving Network
This webinar discussed volunteer caregiving programs that help promote the health, well-being and independence of older adults and people with disabilities. Over 650 programs are located throughout the United States, including the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico. Whether it's a ride to the doctor, picking up groceries/pharmaceuticals, paperwork, or changing a lightbulb, older adults and people with disabilities benefit from a volunteer who lends a helping hand. This webinar, which reprised an AIRS conference workshop, taught participants how to identify the contact for the nearest volunteer caregiving program in their area; understand the types of services available through Volunteer Caregiving; and make appropriate referrals to their local volunteer caregiving organization. Our presenters were Tammy Glenn, Acting Executive Director and Vice President for the National Volunteer Caregiving Network (NVCN), Jim Archer, NVCN Trustee, and Paula Marrone-Reese, National LEAD Ambassador.
July 11, 2018: The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Aging Population
This webinar provided an overview of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Aging population for Information & Referral/Assistance (I&R/A) professionals. As the most diverse of all minority groups, AAPIs represent ethnicities with origins to more than 30 countries, and people that speak over 100 different languages. Each AAPI older adult identifies with unique cultural values, identities, and traditions. During this session, Heather Chun, Director of Technical Assistance for the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA), provided a general overview of AAPI older adult populations throughout the United States, including demographic trends, cultural diversity and barriers to accessing services. Heather also provided resources and best practices to help I&R/A professionals integrate cultural and linguistic competence into their work with AAPI older adults, strengthening access to the Aging Network's long-term service and support system for this diverse minority group nationwide.
June 12, 2018: VA System of Care
Serving veterans and caregivers with information, referrals, assistance and other supports is an important component of work within aging and disability networks. This webinar discussed resources for caregivers of veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Caregiver Support Program offers a menu of services to support family members and friends who care for Veterans at home and in their communities. The VA Caregiver Support Line is a national call center staffed by licensed social workers, who provide information and assist caregivers and Veterans in accessing services and supports through the VA. Our presenter was Christy Reynolds, LMSW, Program Coordinator with the VA Caregiver Support Line.
April 26, 2018: MassOptions: Connecting Individuals to Services through a Centralized I&R Platform
The University of Massachusetts Medical School, its nonprofit business affiliate UHealthSolutions, and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs launched the MassOptions program in 2015 as a free online and helpline service to simplify access to long-term services and supports for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers throughout Massachusetts. MassOptions blends the person-centered communication that is at the heart of I&R with a centralized, innovative technological resource to better connect individuals to multiple services. During this webinar, we learned about how this technology-driven platform fulfills its key mission of delivering effective I&R/A services, and heard how program partners are sustaining and expanding this work. Our presenters were Jeff Auger, Director of UHealthSolutions, and Kerrie Topi, Associate Director of Customer Service Operations, UHealthSolutions.
March 13, 2018: Plan Your Way to Better Inclusion of LGBT Elders
The Aging Network plays a critical role in delivering services to older adults across the country. Yet, LGBT older adults often remain invisible and may not seek services due to fear of, and experiences with, discrimination. In 2017, SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBT Aging released the guide Strengthen Your State and Local Aging Plan: A Practical Guide for Expanding LGBT Inclusion. During this webinar, we heard from State Units on Aging who have been successful in including LGBT older adults in their state plans. They discussed how planning has helped with LGBT outreach and services, as well as challenges and lessons learned.
February 14, 2018: State of the States in Aging and Disability
ADvancing States administered a survey in 2017 of state agencies that deliver long-term services and supports (LTSS), including aging and disability agencies and Medicaid programs, regarding significant policy, fiscal, and operational issues occurring within each state. The survey collected detailed information about the structure of agencies, the supports provided, and the populations served by state programs. All 50 states and the District of Columbia responded. This webinar discussed key issues and trends that emerged as common themes across the country, and implications for I&R/A programs. Our presenter was Damon Terzaghi, Senior Director at ADvancing States.
January 19, 2018: Building Capacity to Serve Older Adults with Mental Health Conditions
I&R/A professionals across the country are receiving more calls for assistance from individuals with mental health conditions, often in conjunction with other complex needs. At the same time, mental health services are among the most frequently reported unmet service needs. This webinar discussed serving older adults with mental health conditions and capacity-building initiatives for this population. Our presenter, Jocelyn Chen Wise, serves as Project Director at the Fuqua Center for Late-Life Depression, an initiative of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Emory University. As Project Director, Jocelyn provides support for community projects including the Fuqua Center’s work in affordable senior housing, and she serves as a social worker in the outpatient geriatric psychiatry clinic to assist individuals and families navigating mental health and aging resources.
November 29, 2017: Public-Private Partnerships at Work
Learn the beneﬁts of a private-public collaboration between an AAA/ADRC, local University and local Federally Qualiﬁed Health Center (FQHC). Senior Connection Center, the AAA serving Tampa, Florida, has worked in partnership with the University of South Florida and the local FQHC to facilitate older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers to further access home and community-based support through the use of a Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) grant. The grant-funded program, known as the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), has also helped the AAA to educate new professionals in the medical ﬁeld, exchange referrals with local community clinics, and gain further exposure among primary care physicians. This webinar reprised a session given at the 2017 AIRS conference. Presenters were Katie Parkinson and Zeke Barbosa of the Senior Connection Center, and Anna Wenders, University of South Florida.
October 10, 2017: Understanding Medicare
With Medicare Open Enrollment beginning October 15, 2017, now is an opportune time to enhance or refresh your understanding of key components of the Medicare program. This webinar discussed Medicare eligibility and coverage options as well as educational resources from Medicare Made Clear(TM) that can assist I&R/A agencies and the individuals they serve. The webinar also addressed frequently asked questions regarding Medicare options. Our guest presenters from UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Made Clear team were Kathy Spenler, Program Lead, and Karol Carstensen, Editorial Director.

August 8, 2017: ADA Network National Overview
Helping individuals achieve their goals for inclusion, participation, and community living may call for I&R/A specialists to assist and empower inquirers to request accommodations and understand their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as help to ensure the ADA compliance of their agencies’ I&R/A services. This webinar discussed how the resources and training of the ADA National Network can assist you in this work. This webinar provided an overview of the ten regional ADA centers and their activities, reviewed the basics of ADA civil rights protections, and highlighted how the ADA applies to older adults with age-onset disabilities. Our presenter was Michael Richardson, Director of the Northwest ADA Center.
June 29, 2017: Responding to Elder Abuse: Resource for Information and Referral Programs
This webinar shared about the resources of the U.S Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Elder Justice Initiative. Our presenters shared key statistics on elder abuse, provided an overview of the types and warning signs of abuse, and demonstrated the resources available through the Elder Justice Initiative website. The Elder Justice Initiative coordinates the Justice Department’s enforcement and programmatic efforts to combat elder abuse, neglect, and financial fraud and supports state and local efforts to combat elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation through training, resources, and information. The webinar also highlighted the role of the national Eldercare Locator. This webinar is brought to you by ADvancing States’s I&R Support Center, AIRS and n4a. June 22, 2017: America's Health Rankings Senior Report, 2017 Edition
“America's Health Rankings Senior Report, 2017 Edition" was a webinar that explored the most recent data released about senior health on a national and state-by-state basis, according to the Senior Health Rankings Report recently released by United Health Foundation. Participants learned about national health successes and challenges, senior health state rankings, and improving the health of our nation’s seniors. The report, in its fifth annual edition, offers a comprehensive analysis of senior population health across 34 measures of senior health. Additionally, accompanying the report is new survey data, released in partnership with the Alliance for Aging Research, that explores the issues of financial preparedness for health care costs in retirement. March 22, 2017: The Amputee Coalition's National Limb Loss Resource Center: A Critical Tool to Help You Meet the Needs of Your Clients with Limb Loss
Since 1997, the Amputee Coalition has operated the National Limb Loss Resource Center to meet the information and resource needs of the limb loss community. As a specialized I&R center, the Coalition’s NLLRC provides a critical resource for I&R practitioners who may encounter clients with limb loss. This webinar provided background about the limb loss community - including information and resource needs, how the Amputee Coalition’s NLLRC addresses those needs, and how the NLLRC can serve as a resource for other I&R centers. Our presenter was George Gondo, Director of Research and Grants at the Amputee Coalition.
February 15, 2017: Helping People Access Home and Community Based Services: Migrating, Coding, Storing, and Searching for Data in MinnesotaHelp.info
Effectively managing data to support individuals' access to community resource information and needed services is a challenge shared by many information and referral/assistance programs. In this webinar, speakers from the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging demonstrated how Minnesota's aging and disability network approached this challenge through development and maintenance of MinnesotaHelp.info. Our presenters shared information and lessons learned from over 16 years of experience with data management, maintenance, and sharing. January 24, 2017: Helping Connect Individuals to Benefits: Approaches, Tools, & Promising Practices
Despite the availability of public benefits programs that can help meet basic needs and improve economic security, many low-income older adults and younger adults with disabilities are under-enrolled. In this webinar, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) presented findings from a recent study on how stigma affects perceptions of these programs, and results from a national survey of what messages can effectively counter stigma. Participants also learned how NCOA’s newly redesigned online screening tool, BenefitsCheckUp®, can assist with identifying benefits. The ADvancing States presented information about the current outreach campaign to individuals with disabilities that may be eligible for financial assistance through the Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) and Low Income Subsidies (LIS). Participants learned about promising practices for providing outreach to low-income Medicare beneficiaries to increase enrollment in Medicare savings programs. Supported Decision-Making is a way older adults and people with disabilities can make their own decisions, by receiving the help they need to do so. This webinar discussed what Supported Decision-Making means in practical, everyday terms; why it is important; and how it is emerging in practice within the United States. Our presenter was Morgan Whitlatch, Legal Director for the Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities and Lead Project Director of the National Resource Center for Supported Decision-Making.
November 2, 2016: Data and Outcomes: National Survey Findings
As I&R/A professionals know, good data is critical to achieving good outcomes for the individuals and families that you serve. As part of a data study for the state of Colorado, ADvancing States recently conducted a national survey of State Agencies on Aging and Disabilities and Medicaid Agencies to assess the status of data collection and outcome measurement for services for older adults and persons with disabilities, and to highlight important trends, developments and practices. The survey also touched upon structure and location of ADRC/SEP/NWD systems. Participants of the webinar learned about these key findings, including information on systems for consumer access to long-term services and supports. This webinar, brought to you by ADvancing States' I&R Support Center, AIRS and n4a, highlighted innovative programs and initiatives that address transportation needs. Attendees learned about the newly formed National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) which promotes the availability and accessibility of transportation options for older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers and communities. The presenters were National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) program directors Virginia Dize of the NADTC and Patrice Earnest of the Eldercare Locator.
August 4, 2016: Guardianship: Key Concepts for I&R/A Professionals
Guardianship is a key but complicated issue that aging and disability I&R/A specialists address in their work with consumers, family members, and caregivers. This training covered the basics of guardianship including the process of becoming a guardian, responsibilities of the guardian, the difference between guardianship and powers of attorney and a discussion on when a guardianship may be necessary. To help I&R/A specialists gain more insight into guardianship issues, our presenter, Kim Grier, Adult Guardianship Specialist, Georgia Department of Human Services, shared her expertise on this topic.
July 20, 2016: Disability and Rehabilitation Resources for I&R/A Agencies
The National I&R Support Center hosted a webinar that offered information about good, evidence-based programs, tools, and materials that can help clients with disabilities. The grantees of the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) generate a wealth of ready-to-use guides, tools, webinars, and more for everything from creating welcoming congregations to testing the accessibility of the local health club. The presenter for the webinar was Jessica Chaiken, Media and Information Services Manager, HeiTech Services, Inc. for the National Rehabilitation Information Center. She provided a sample of the diverse library of NIDILRR-funded resources that your agency can use right now to help people with disabilities live independently, and where to find more. This webinar was an encore presentation of a session given at the 2016 AIRS I&R Conference.

The National I&R Support Center hosted a webinar that explored the most recent data released about senior health on a national and state-by-state basis, according to Senior Health Rankings Report that was released by the United Health Foundation. Participants learned about national health improvements and challenges, senior health state rankings, and tools that can be used to communicate data. The presenter for this webinar was Sarah Milder, MPH, Principal Epidemiologist, Arundel Metrics.
April 12, 2016: An Overview of the Paralysis Resource Center
The National I&R Support Center hosted a webinar on the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Paralysis Resource Center. The Reeve Foundation's Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) promotes the health and well-being of people living with a spinal cord injury, mobility impairment, and paralysis by providing comprehensive information, and resources and referral services. This webinar taught attendees about the Paralysis Resource Center, including the Center's I&R services; resources on spinal cord injury, paralysis and mobility related disabilities; peer support program; and the needs of individuals and families served by the Center. This webinar was presented by Bernadette Mauro, Director of Information and Resource Services.
February 24, 2016: PACE
The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) model provides an integrated system of care that is community-based, comprehensive, and coordinated for eligible older adults. Over 200 PACE centers are operated by 116 organizations in 32 states, and this number continues to grow. Yet, when providing information and counseling on long-term services and supports options, specialists may lack information on PACE. This I&R Center webinar taught attendees more about the PACE model, including services, partnerships, and outcomes. The webinar was presented by Joy Cameron, Senior Director, State Policy, from the National PACE Association.
January 12, 2016: Promising Practices for MIPPA Outreach
This webinar gave participants an overview of MIPPA legislation and the Medicare savings programs, and highlights of the case studies used to identify promising practices for outreach to low-income Medicare beneficiaries. To learn about promising practices for providing outreach to low-income Medicare beneficiaries to increase enrollment in Medicare savings programs, ADvancing States gathered information about MIPPA outreach efforts through the 2015 national survey of aging and disability I&R/A agencies. December 9, 2015: ADvancing States' 2015 State of the States
This webinar provided an overview of ADvancing States' 2015 State of the States report, which provides detailed information on each state's long-term services and supports (LTSS) systems. This report is the result of a yearlong research project that collected information about the significant policy, fiscal, and operational issues occurring within each state. The results of the 2015 survey represent a snapshot of the current status of state government employees, the agencies that administer the programs, and the services that are provided. ADvancing States' Senior Director Damon Terzaghi presented key themes and findings from the survey.
October 27, 2015: Minnesota No Wrong Door Model
This webinar provided an advanced look into Minnesota's no wrong door approach to its aging and disability resource centers. Since 2003, the network has grown to 1500 users and 300 agencies that use a multimedia presence tool called Revation LinkLive®. The webinar taught listeners about the process behind building a network, methods to engage new partners, and the innovation which has allowed the Senior LinkAge Line® to grow to handling over 265,000 contacts annually from seniors and caregivers. The webinar described the ways a no wrong door system can effectively use technology and shared the innovations used in the Minnesota model. Presenters were Krista Boston, Director, Consumer Assistance Programs, Minnesota Board on Aging, and Elissa Schley, Management Analyst Lead, Minnesota Board on Aging. October 8, 2015: Findings from the 2015 National Survey of Aging and Disability IR/A Agencies
In 2015, the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities (ADvancing States), in partnership with the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL), conducted a national survey of I&R/A agencies in the aging and disability networks. September 15, 2015: Sharing Solutions: Building a "No Wrong Door" System of Access
Strong partnerships between Texas Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) and 211 Area Information Centers are essential to providing a true “no wrong door” system of access. This webinar taught participants about the Texas experience enhancing streamlined, person-centered information and referral services with respect to the Texas Balancing Incentive Program grant. State level and local ADRC and 211 network partners highlighted state-level initiatives and successful “best practice” models for outreach and referral management. The presenters were Leigh Schroeder, Manager, Program Business Operations, Strategic Operations and Grants, Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services; Beth Noah, ADRC Coordinator, Aging and Disability Resource Center of Tarrant County; and Vicki Mize, 2-1-1 Director, United Way of Tarrant County. This presentation was first given at the 2015 AIRS conference.
August 5, 2015: Future Planning
Future Planning is creating a guide for a person with an intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD) to lead a good life as independently as possible. A plan is important throughout all stages of life and especially in the future after the parent or caregiver is no longer able to provide support. The Arc's Center for Future Planning aims to provide support and resources to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD); their families, including parents or caregivers who are aging; and professionals who support them. Information was presented by The Arc experts Robin Shaffert, Senior Executive Officer, Individual and Family Support, and Jenny Sladen, Program Manager, National Initiatives.
July 8, 2015: Medicare Educational Resources
As more Americans attain Medicare eligibility, aging and disability I&R/A agencies are called upon to be a resource on the Medicare program. This webinar taught viewers about the Medicare Made ClearTM campaign and Medicare educational resources that can assist I&R/A agencies and the consumers they serve. Information was presented by Alyssa Malinski Erickson, Associate Director of Marketing, UnitedHealthcare, Medicare & Retirement.
April 29, 2015: Financial Security for Older Adults
A recent survey of aging and disability I&R/A agencies found that "financial assistance" is both a frequent service request and a significant unmet need, suggesting the prevalence of financial need among those seeking I&R/A assistance and the challenges to providing information and referral to meet these needs. This webinar identified issues related to financial need in older adulthood and share information on resources that specialists can use when working with older adults. The presentation also covered resources from the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) and the National Resource Center on Women and Retirement Planning, a center that WISER operates in partnership with the Administration on Aging. Lara Hinz, Director of Programs at WISER presented the information.
March 26, 2015: Education & Training for Older Workers
Older workers were particularly hard hit by the Great Recession, and even as labor markets have improved for some Americans, many older adults continue to struggle with unemployment, underemployment, age discrimination, and skills gaps. This webinar addressed issues facing older workers, explored training and education options and considerations for this population, and highlighted trends and innovations that may benefit older workers and older learners. Led by Kathy Krepcio, Executive Director of the Heldrich Center, the presentation included findings from a new report, Improving Education and Training for Older Workers, developed by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, as part of the AARP Future of Work@50+ Initiative.
February 4, 2015: Commit to Inclusion
People with disabilities show high levels of poor health outcomes, likely because of lack of inclusion in health promotion programs. This webinar covered the newly introduced Guidelines to Disability Inclusion in Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Programs and Policies and the Commit to Inclusion campaign that promotes the Guidelines. The Guidelines were created with an expert panel using criteria to qualify each guideline. They are intended for any organization that provides physical activity nutrition, or obesity programs or policies. The webinar featured Lewis Kraus, Deputy Director, Center on Disability at the Public Health Institute, and Amy Rauworth, Director of Policy and Public affairs at Lakeshore Foundation and Associate Director of the NCBDDD-CDC funded National Center on Health, Physical Activity, and Disability. January 21, 2015: Virginia's No Wrong Door System
States and communities across the country have undertaken efforts to streamline access to long-term services and supports through the development of "no wrong door" systems. The development of a No Wrong Door system in Virginia reflects a unique public-private partnership approach to providing older adults and persons with disabilities with comprehensive information and streamlined access to available long-term supports through collaborative partnerships and shared technology. This webinar highlighted No Wrong Door system developments in Virginia, including the Communication, Referral, Information and Assistance (CRIA) system. The webinar featured Erika Yssel, No Wrong Door Expansion Specialist with the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.
