Workshop: Nutrition and Aging

The Institute of Medicine's National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is hosting a two day workshop on nutrition and aging. The workshop will examine what we can each do to address the changing dietary needs of the older adult population. There will be specific emphasis on gaining understanding of the factors in the physical, social, and cultural environment that impact nutrition and the aging process. The workshop will cover:

Demystifying Social Security: 2015 Summer Academy

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) will host its popular Summer Academy series, consisting of two free, day-long sessions on Social Security and Medicare. The sessions feature leading speakers in the field as well as interactive exercises. The Summer Academy may be particularly of interest for interns and professionals who are new to the field.

This is the first of the Summer Academy sessions. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The second session, Demystifying Medicare, will be held on July 24, also at the Barbara Jordan Conference Center.

Advisory Committee on Increasing Competitive Integrated Employment for Individuals with Disabilities

The fourth meeting for the Advisory Committee on Increasing Competitive Integrated Employment for Individuals with Disabilities will be held in Washington DC. The four subcommittees of the Committee will report on their work thus far on the draft chapter for the interim report. There will also be expert panels that will address issues with provider transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment and a panel of providers. Acknowledgement will be given to the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. On July 15th from 2:15 to 3:00 PM EDT, there will be a public comment period.

Improving Public Programs: Advanced Analytics for Better Decision Making

Federal and state agencies across the country are hiring chief data scientists and analytics officers to meet the growing demand for advanced analytics in the public sector. As more government agencies and programs turn to data for answers, a rigorous, scientific approach becomes even more critical to understanding their findings. For a variety of public programs—in health, education, and other human services—advanced analytics can be used to identify fraud, waste, and abuse; to predict outcomes for program participants; and to identify cost-saving strategies for policymakers.

Oversight Hearing - The Vital Responsibility of Serving the Nation's Aging and Disabled Communities

An oversight hearing regarding the nation's aging and disabled communities will be held by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations. Witnesses will include Carolyn W. Colvin, Social Security Acting Commissioner, and Kathy Greenlee of the Administration for Community Living.
